Variable Red Giants in the LMC: Pulsating Stars and Binaries?
نویسنده
چکیده
Infrared J and K photometry has been obtained of all red giants in the half square degree region of the LMC bar searched for variables using the MACHO database by Wood et al. (1999). The K–logP diagram shows the five distinct period–luminosity sequences which are also evident in the MACHO photometry. The K–logP plot allows identification of the Mira sequence from among the five observed sequences. As shown in Wood et al. (1999), comparison of observed periods, luminosities and period ratios with theoretical models identifies Miras unambiguously as radial fundamental mode pulsators, while semi-regular variables can be pulsating in the first, second or third overtone, or even the fundamental mode. All these variables lie on just three of the five distinct sequences, and they all appear to be on the AGB. The nature of the variability of stars on the other two sequences is currently unknown. Possibilities include contact and semi-detached binaries, rotating stars with giant star spots, episodic dust formation, rotationally stabilised non-radial g− modes and strange pulsation modes caused by convection–pulsation interaction. These possibilities are discussed.

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملRed variables in the OGLE - II data base – III . Constraints on the three - dimensional structures of the LMC and SMC
We present an analysis of the 3-D structure of the Magellanic Clouds, using period– luminosity (P–L) relations of pulsating red giants in the OGLE-II sample. By interpreting deviations from the mean P–L relations as distance modulus variations, we examine the threedimensional distributions of the sample. The results for the Large Magellanic Cloud, based solely on stars below the tip of the Red ...
متن کاملEclipsing Binaries in the Macho Database: New Periods and Classifications for 3031 Systems in the Large Magellanic Cloud
Eclipsing binaries offer a unique opportunity to determine fundamental physical parameters of stars using the constraints on the geometry of the systems. Here we present a reanalysis of publicly available two-color observations of about 6800 stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, obtained by the MACHO project between 1992 and 2000 and classified as eclipsing variable stars. Of these, less than ha...
متن کاملVariable Stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud: Discovery of Extragalactic W UMa Binaries
We observed a field in the disk of the LMC on two consecutive nights in search of rapid variable stars. We have found two pulsating stars of type RRab and δ Sct, and four binary stars, among the latter one sdB or CV below the LMC blue Main Sequence and three very close binary systems on the MS. At least one of the MS binaries, and possibly all three, are the first solar-type (W UMa-type) contac...
متن کاملThe Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. Red Clump Stars as a Distance Indicator
We present relation of the mean I-band brightness of red clump stars on metallicity. Red clump stars were proposed to be a very attractive standard candle for distance determination. The calibration is based on 284 nearby red giant stars whose high quality spectra allowed to determine accurate individual metal abundances. High quality par-allaxes (σπ/π < 10%) and photometry of these very bright...
